Isle of Man

29 June 2023 – Castletown, Isle of Man

On the way from Northern Ireland to Wales, we stopped in the Isle of Man, an island roughly between them in the Irish Sea. We spent two nights in Peel, which has a gated harbour due to the fact that it would otherwise dry out completely due to ten foot tides. This meant that we had to arrive there strictly before seven o’clock to make it in time before the gate closed. We were also warned that Festina Lente’s keel would sometimes be resting on the bottom of the harbour, though if that did happen we didn’t notice.

Peel has a large old castle, as well as a beautiful walk up a hill from which the town can be seen on one side and the windy ocean on the other. It made us grateful we had decided to stay put that day rather than being at sea.

Once the weather cleared up, we sailed to Castletown on the other side of the island to bring us closer to Wales and shorten the next day’s sail.

Castletown is very pretty, with lots of seaside whitewashed houses and narrow cobblestone streets. It also has the oldest currently running parliament in the world.

We left Castletown early this morning and sailed to Holyhead in Wales, which I am super excited about getting to see more of over the next week or two.
