Sardinia

7 November 2023 – La Pelosa, Sardinia, Italy

We’ve spent the past week in Sardinia, anchoring in a large bay on the northwest corner of the island to wait out a gale. It was about a thirty hour trip from the Balearic Islands and we arrived in the early afternoon.

The first thing we did when we got there was go out for pizza. It was delicious.

When we went out for pizza a second time a few nights later, we saw wild boars walking along the road. They didn’t seem bothered by us but we could hear them snorting.

We divided our time between La Pelosa at one end of the bay and Asinara at the other depending on where the wind was blowing from. La Pelosa had better protection, but wind from the north caused ocean swell to roll in so we relocated to Asinara.

On one of the first nights that we were in La Pelosa, a squall came through gusting up to forty knots and we were worried that we might drag into the stone break wall of the marina behind us. We all put on our rain gear and life jackets and sat in the cockpit for about an hour trying to decide whether or not it was safer to move or stay, but nothing ended up happening and we didn’t drag so eventually we went to bed.

The wind was so strong that when we walked out to the headland, waves were curling around a little island in the harbour mouth and turning 360º as they spun around it.

We also hiked up to the top of a nearby hill and almost got blown away, but it was worth it for the great view.
