San Pietro

25 April 2024 – Carloforte, San Pietro, Italy

There’s not much for me to report on in recent times; while waiting for the Mistral (strong northwest winds) to die down so that we can continue sailing towards Gibraltar, we have been hanging around on San Pietro, an island right next to Sardinia. It has been super windy this whole week so we haven’t gone out much except to walk the dog. That being said, San Pietro is beautiful and rural, with hills and forests all around, so it’s still a great place to be even if viewed mainly through the deck saloon windows.

We first went to a marina in the town of Carloforte and spent two nights there to stock up on groceries (we had been rationing out the last of the vegetables) and go out for pizza one last time before leaving Italy. Carloforte is a nice place to be, the sort of place that I picture when someone describes a small Italian town, but we didn’t feel like paying for a marina so we left to try and anchor somewhere else in the sound between San Pietro and Sardinia.

The first place we thought about anchoring was barely a dent along the coastline and exposed to swell from the Mediterranean so we gave up on that and sailed back into the sound to check out another beach we could anchor off of. Because it was super windy, however, the fetch building from the nearby Carloforte break wall was enough to make it a bit wavy. The third time was the charm, and after moving a little closer to the break wall, we anchored in the only sandy patch in a sea of weeds then quickly retreated down below to get out of the wind.

We’ve been in this anchorage for a few days, and will probably leave tomorrow for the Balearic Islands, hopefully arriving the following afternoon. The wind has calmed down a lot so it is shaping up to be a calm journey.
