Hanging Out in Ria Formosa

11 October 2023 – Ria Formosa, Portugal

We haven’t been doing much recently except enjoy the heat and hang out at the beach. The Levanter is still blowing strong out of Gibraltar but it looks as though the wind will switch to come from the west by the weekend, so we’ll probably leave here a bit before then. My dad is antsy to go but I’m having a great time relaxing here.

The little desert island of Culatra has a few small stores but to get a lot of groceries, we had to take the dinghy into town. There’s a sandbar in the middle of the bay so we had to go around it, which takes about ten to fifteen minutes, but at high tide there is a passable route over it which is much quicker. By the time shopping was done, it was low tide but we decided to try to cut through it anyway despite the fact that there was no water. We spent about half an hour sitting on mud and wondering if the tide would come up soon enough for us to cut across (it didn’t) before we ended up going around it anyway.

I have been spending a lot more days reading on the beach while Sirius enjoys the sun and my mom and Jonas play in the waves. My dad even got excited when he found a tattered beach umbrella sticking out of a garbage can, then five minutes later my mom and I found a beach umbrella in perfect condition next to another garbage can so we took that instead.

It was Jonas’s birthday a few days ago, so he and my dad went fishing. I made him a birthday cake and we went out for dinner.
